Energy Type: Solar

Energy from the sun is converted/transferred into useable energy by many things:
  • Solar Water Heating- Heat from the sun is used to heat water in glass panels on your roof.
  • Solar Furnaces- A huge array of mirrors concentrate the suns energy into a small space and produce very high temperatures.
  • Solar Powered Boilers- Fuelled by the solar power collected through panels on the roof of your home.

Solar energy is used today in many ways:
  • Solar Powered Electric Boats- Boats powered by the sun in Coniston Water, Lake District, England.
  • Solar-Cells- "Photovoltaic or PV or Photoelectric" cells that convert light directly into electricity.
  • Solar Towers- Greenhouse warmed by the sun with a tower in the middle of the greenhouse. Hot air rises up from the greenhouse and into the tower, this drives turmbines along the way generating power.

They're many advantages of using the source of Solar energy:
  • Solar energy is free, it produces no waste or pollution and it is in need of no fuel.
  • Solar power can be used where there is no easy way to get electricity to a remote place.
  • Solar power is handy for solar power uses such as; Solar powered garden lights and battery chargers or for helping your home energy bills.

As excellent use as Solar power is, It does have some disadvantages. Such as:
  • Solar power doesn't work at night.
  • Solar power can be very unreliable unless in a sunny climate.
  • It is very expensive to build Solar power stations.

Solar power is renewable!:
  • Yes! Solar power is renewable.
  • The sun will continue to shine, so it makes sense to use it.
